Degrees of Enemies
What it's about
Langley, 1978. For eleven years Alden Corliss has rated everyone he knows on a scale of one to five: how little it would take for them to betray him. Three hundred and forty-one index cards sit in his desk drawer. One more card rides in his coat pocket, beside a brass thermometer, marked with a number that doesn't exist.
Then an analyst named Denby dies on a wet road outside Purcellville, Virginia, three weeks after pulling a file he wasn't cleared to read. The file carries an eight-letter code word. The same word is written on the back of Corliss's oldest card.
In Vienna, a retired operative who spent sixteen years becoming other people receives a single order: reactivate. Her target is the one man she was never supposed to love.
As Corliss and Erika Kestrel pull at the thread, they uncover a program inside the Agency that has been studying human loyalty for seventeen years, with real lives as its data. And it has been studying them. With a seventy-two-hour ultimatum running and a dead man's switch set, they have to decide which of their enemies to trust, and what they are willing to lose to drag the truth into the light.
A Cold War spy thriller about loyalty, betrayal, and the one thing a system of numbers was never built to measure.
